NHS Cheshire and Merseyside April 2026 Blog

I hope you were able to enjoy a restful Easter break and spend some valuable time with family and friends.
As you will know, a six-day period of industrial action by resident doctors began immediately after the Easter Bank Holiday weekend and concluded at 7am on Monday, 13 April.
I would like to thank members of the public for their patience, understanding and for continuing to use NHS services appropriately during this time.
My gratitude also goes to our dedicated NHS staff and system partners, whose professionalism and commitment ensured that disruption to patient care was kept to a minimum.
Phase One of the Southport Inquiry report was published on Monday 13 April. We welcome the publication of the report and its findings.
Our thoughts and condolences go out to the families, friends and loved ones of the victims, the local community, and everyone affected by these tragic events.
A wide range of support continues to be available via the Southport Together section of the Sefton Council website.
I would also like to express my sympathies following the tragic meningitis deaths in Kent last month.
I would strongly encourage parents and carers to check their children’s vaccination records and contact their GP practice if any doses have been missed.
Additionally, the spring COVID-19 vaccination programme is now open for eligible groups. You do not need to wait to be contacted - appointments can be booked quickly and easily via the NHS website or app.
