Cheshire and Merseyside trusts recognised in HSJ Patient Safety Awards 2024 shortlist

Eight trusts across Cheshire and Merseyside have been shortlisted for the 2024 HSJ Patient Safety Awards.

The awards showcase key initiatives and innovations in patient safety across the from the past year, while recognising the hard-working teams within the NHS who strive to deliver the best patient care.

Cheshire and Merseyside trusts have been shortlisted across ten categories. They include:

  • Wirral Community Health and Care and Wirral University Teaching Hospitals are jointly nominated for the Best Use of Integrated Care and Partnership Working in Patient Safety Award, for their work to reduce the impact of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and strengthen infection prevention and control by improving the diagnosis and management of urinary tract infections (UTI) and hydration.
  • Wirral Community Health and Care is also on the shortlist for Virtual or Remote Care Initiative of the Year for its use of remote clinical monitoring to promote patient safety and effective outcomes in children’s speech and language and dietetics community services.
  • Cheshire and Merseyside Cancer Alliance – hosted by Clatterbridge Cancer Centre – is a finalist in both the Community Care Initiative of the Year and Early-Stage Patient Safety Innovation of the Year categories for promoting community ownership of cancer information as a means to increase timely presentation.
  • Cheshire and Wirral Partnership also appears on the shortlist for Early-Stage Patient Safety Innovation of the Year for optimising safety and innovating through the digitisation of Mental Health Act (MHA) administration, which has also been nominated for the Safety Improvement through Technology Award.
  • The Walton Centre is nominated for Deteriorating Patients and Rapid Response Initiative of the Year for its Surgical, Medical, Acute Response Team (SMART), and also appears on the shortlist for Patient Safety Team of the Year for its collaborative approach to reducing cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) infection in patients with an external ventricular drain.
  • Mersey Care is also nominated for Patient Safety Team of the Year for its trust-wide implementation of the Patient Safety Incident Response Framework (PSIRF), while its Mental Health Triage and Response Team is shortlisted for the Seni Lewis Award.
  • Warrington and Halton Teaching Hospitals is shortlisted in the Maternity and Midwifery Services Initiative of the Year category for its collaborative approach between nursing and midwifery to prevent falls during maternity.
  • Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital rounds of the list of Cheshire and Merseyside nominees as a finalist in the Learning Disabilities Initiative of the Year category for its Learning Disability and Autism Support Team.
